The journey of Indian football has had its ups and downs, a path marked by both exciting triumphs and tough setbacks. Right now, the sport is facing a big challenge—its governance crisis has dragged on for over 15 months, leading to a troubling drop in the national team's FIFA ranking from 99 in July 2023 all the way down to 127. However, rather than giving in to despair, we should focus on the possibilities ahead. With the right changes in leadership and governance, Indian football can find its way back to the spotlight. Here are several reasons to fuel our optimism.
New Leadership and Good Governance
It is anticipated that Indian football will eventually see new leadership. With competent leadership at the helm, Indian football could enter a phase where good governance practices are adopted, leading to transparent and accountable management of the sport. Should this occur, trust and confidence in the system are likely to improve. Currently, fans and the market lack confidence in the existing system due to poor governance and frequent controversies. Effective leadership could pave the way for a clear strategy to develop a strong national team, encompassing not only the senior men's team but also all age groups, including women's national teams. Ultimately, good leadership is crucial for driving change and advancing football in India.
The Potential for Talent
India possesses a vast pool of talent, especially within its younger demographic. With approximately 600 million people under the age of 25, the country has the capability to develop world-class players. Icons like IM Vijayan, Bhaichung Bhutia, and Sunil Chhetri exemplify how Indian players can excel globally, highlighting their natural skill and creativity. By investing in better talent development, enhancing the youth competitive environment, and providing adequate resources and facilities, we can turn our young talent into formidable international competitors.
Youth Engagement and Passion for Football
Football's popularity among Indian youth is skyrocketing. Recent studies show that over 80% of young people in urban areas actively follow football leagues like the English Premier League or La Liga. This passion creates an energized football community where young talent is encouraged to pursue their dreams. When young fans rally together, it fosters a community eager to see India succeed in the sport.
Economic Growth Supporting Football
India's economy is experiencing growth, raising expectations for enhanced support for football, provided the sport enhances its governance and adopts a modern framework. With the GDP expanding at approximately 7% annually, this economic climate creates opportunities for increased investments in training facilities and youth development programs. These financial contributions are crucial for turning ambitions into reality.
Adopting a Modern Structure
The structure of Indian football is fragile, with numerous gaps present. The grassroots, youth, and elite football frameworks, along with women's football and the coach development system, are far from aligning with modern football standards. The league structure is relatively new, and the entire league hierarchy needs reinforcement from the city to district, state, regional, and national levels. Although many clubs are making significant investments in football, the number of elite clubs needs to increase tenfold to significantly impact India's football ecosystem. With an improved league structure, top clubs could foster the emergence of more talent and new areas of growth within Indian football.
Government Support
The Indian government has demonstrated a promising commitment to supporting the sport. During the U17 World Cups hosted by India in 2017 and 2022, both the central and various State governments invested in infrastructure and other necessary areas. With good governance and a transparent administration focused on long-term planning, we can anticipate a significant increase in government investment in football. A change in leadership could result in a more proactive approach, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and partnerships with private entities are fostered.
Support from FIFA and AFC
FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) can significantly influence Indian football's revival. By offering technical support, funding, and expertise, they can help establish a strong framework for footballing excellence. Their involvement ensures that our existing obstacles can be tackled efficiently.
Emerging Super Talents
By establishing effective youth football structures, India has the potential to become a hub for exceptional talent. It only takes one breakthrough, the emergence of a single extraordinary talent, to transform the game in India permanently. For such talents to arise, grassroots initiatives must be strengthened. Given India's large youth population, engaging them through a solid grassroots and youth framework makes it only a matter of time before India discovers a gem that will brighten its future and elevate the nation to a higher level. A comprehensive scouting network, elite coach development, global partnerships, and increased investment in talent development are crucial for uncovering and nurturing these super talents. Talents can achieve prominence if we direct resources towards their development.
Improving League Structure
Debates frequently arise regarding the Indian league system, often highlighting its lack of competitiveness. To fully realize their potential, the top four tiers of India's league system (from I-League 3 to ISL) should unite under a new format and structure, with all divisions managed and operated professionally. For example, the ISL and I-League should adhere to a unified standard and philosophy, while I-League 2-3 should be revamped to enhance their strength. This potential transformation into a more exciting league could attract over 20% more fans, fostering a healthier competitive environment and increasing the appeal of football.
Investment in Talent Development
The future of Indian football depends on clubs committing to talent development. Creating academies like Barcelona's La Masia can ensure players receive quality training opportunities, filling the gaps in skills and knowledge necessary for success.
Olympics 2036 Bid Impact
India's bid to host the 2036 Olympics presents a unique chance to shine a light on football. Such a major event can attract substantial investments, upgrade infrastructures, and encourage grassroots participation, ultimately benefiting all levels of the sport.
Growth of Women's Football
Women's football is gaining momentum in India, showing promise for future growth. With increased visibility and resources, there is potential for women’s leagues to flourish. This parallel growth not only benefits women athletes but contributes to the overall development of football in the country.
Development of Elite Coaches
Developing skilled players requires knowledgeable coaches. Investing in coaching education is essential to cultivate a generation of elite coaches who enhance player skills and instill a winning mentality. Quality coaching transforms potential into performance.
Better Stadiums and Facilities
The infrastructure that supports football is crucial for its development. There is an increasing demand for enhanced stadiums and training facilities, essential for both professional and youth clubs. The quality of these facilities significantly affects training efficiency and the overall experience for fans. India has a strong chance of hosting major global football tournaments in the next decade, which would drive the construction of new stadiums and facilities. Additionally, if the commercial aspect of football in India improves, there is a strong likelihood that private investment in football infrastructure will increase, making football a more attractive investment opportunity for investors.
Looking Forward
Despite the current challenges facing Indian football, the future can be bright. With a strong belief in new possibilities, stakeholders can unite to foster an environment of hope and trust. By focusing on talent development, youth engagement, and investments, as well as ensuring support from the government and international bodies, Indian football has a chance to flourish.
The passion of fans and a collective hunger for success can guide Indian football toward a brighter future. Let's embrace this hope and work together to celebrate a golden era in our beloved sport!

Mr. Shaji, You of all people are well aware that the AIFF is a political body, designed to serve the ExCo members who use the so called development funds as a personal piggy bank. It is surprising that you create these blog posts as a so called thought leader while you were part of the very administration and system that has been responsible for destroying football over the last few years for personal benefit. Please do not act like you have the answers as many of the suggestions above are irrelevant in the context of Indian football.
