June 1, 2026, will be marked as a pivotal day in the history of Indian football broadcasting. Just the day after the IPL 2026 season wrapped up in Ahmedabad, where RCB successfully defended their title thanks to Virat Kohli's exceptional performance, Zee Entertainment revealed news that thrilled millions of football enthusiasts throughout India.

Zee has acquired the rights to 39 international football events, including the FIFA World Cup 2026, FIFA World Cup 2030, and the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027. This is more than just a corporate agreement; it marks a strategic milestone for Indian sports broadcasting and sends a strong message that fans in India will have a wider selection of football content from around the globe.

A Perfect Moment to Capture India’s Attention

The timing was highly symbolic. As the cricket excitement of the IPL concluded on 31 May, the following day ushered in a new thrill for football enthusiasts. For several months, fans had been eagerly anticipating news about the broadcaster in India. There were ongoing news stories and social media discussions about who would broadcast the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India. The delay had caused anxiety, but Zee's announcement has now brought relief, joy, and renewed anticipation.

Zee’s Re‑Entry into Football: Bigger, Bolder, Global

Zee's return to football is not just a typical business move. Their press release emphasized a deep emotional connection, reflecting on their past involvement with Indian football and expressing a renewed commitment to the sport's growth. Zee acquired the rights to Indian football in 2005 by signing a 10-year contract with the All India Football Federation for exclusive broadcasting and commercial rights, valued at approximately 275 crore Indian rupees. In 2007, they launched the rebranded National Football League, known as the I-League, with substantial investment.

By the end of 2010, Reliance-IMG, a joint venture, took over the rights from Zee and entered into a 15-year MRA with AIFF, establishing Zee as a pioneer in investing in Indian football through their partnership with AIFF. Therefore, Zee's management has a thorough understanding of the football market and its potential. However, for a broadcaster, it's never just about one sport; it's about providing a diverse range of high-quality content to remain competitive in the market. With premium content like the FIFA World Cup, Zee can undoubtedly position itself as one of the most ambitious and aggressive sports broadcasters.

By acquiring the world’s biggest sporting property, Zee has demonstrated ambition and long‑term vision. The 2026 FIFA World Cup, the largest ever with 104 matches across the USA, Canada, and Mexico, will now reach Indian homes through Zee’s newly launched Unite8 Sports channels and live streaming on Zee5 App.

This marks a notable triumph for Indian fans, who have long yearned for high-quality, accessible football content. The FIFA World Cup holds a unique significance in India, despite the Indian team never having participated in this global event. The excitement and passion for following the beautiful game during the World Cup have reached unprecedented levels, with a strong fan base for several South American and European countries. When Argentina secured the World Cup in 2022, many regions in India celebrated as though their own team had won. Thus, 'Z' partnering with FIFA for the World Cup is viewed as a significant development and success for football enthusiasts in India, much like a celebration.

India: A Sleeping Giant of Football Viewership

Live broadcasting of the World Cup in India started in 1982, with only the semifinals and final matches shown live on the National Channel. In 1986, after a request from the Members of the Legislative Assembly, West Bengal, led by its Sports Minister, appealed to the Prime Minister of India to broadcast the FIFA World Cup 1986 live in India. A parliamentary discussion led the government to decide on broadcasting the FIFA World Cup 1986 live from the second day of the tournament. This decision marked the beginning of India's live engagement with the FIFA World Cup, enabling Indian fans to experience Maradona's magic in Mexico 1986 on the pitch through the Doordarshan national channel.

At that time, a government decision significantly impacted the sale of TV sets in the Indian market, leading to record TV sales. Since then, during every World Cup, the electronics market expected substantial TV sales. However, this expectation is no longer evident due to the significant growth in digital viewership, with smartphones dominating the audience. India has one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the world. Currently, India boasts over 300 million football followers, and this number increases considerably during the World Cup. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar drew 110 million viewers from India, a record likely to be surpassed in 2026.

With Zee’s aggressive distribution strategy, multi‑platform presence, and renewed focus on sports, the 2026 World Cup could set new all‑time viewership records in India.

A Boost for the Indian Sports Broadcasting Industry

Zee’s entry into sports broadcasting is a positive development for the entire Indian sports ecosystem. For years, the market has been dominated by a few players. Zee’s arrival brings:

  • Healthy competition

  • Better content diversity

  • More opportunities for advertisers

  • Greater visibility for global sports

This move will also encourage broadcasters to invest more in football, which has long been underrepresented despite its massive fan base.

A Potential Game‑Changer for Indian Football

This partnership with FIFA could greatly influence Indian football, as long as the sport in India quickly addresses its problems with leading clubs and shifts from an uncertain situation to a stable and secure structure, including the top league:

  • Zee may explore acquiring domestic football properties, including leagues and tournaments.

  • Increased visibility of global football can inspire participation at grassroots.

  • Brands may invest more in football‑related campaigns.

  • The overall football economy in India could see a significant uplift.

India has the potential to become a major football nation, and such broadcasting partnerships can play a significant role in developing a robust football culture.

A Win‑Win for Fans, Brands, and the Football Ecosystem

Advertisers and brands will undoubtedly see the FIFA World Cup as a golden opportunity to connect with millions of passionate fans. Football offers a unique emotional and cultural appeal, and the World Cup provides unmatched reach and engagement.

Zee's reference to Swami Vivekananda’s well-known statement, “You will be nearer to Heaven through football than through the study of the Gita”, goes beyond mere symbolism. It demonstrates their commitment to and appreciation for the potential growth and cultural importance of football in India.

What This Means for the Future

Zee's return to sports broadcasting suggests broader goals. It's likely they will pursue IPL media rights in the future, considering cricket's commercial influence. For the BCCI, this is a positive development, as increased competition leads to higher valuations, more competitive bidding, and the prospect of improved broadcasting deals.

A Personal Note

A few days back, I shared on X that the announcement of the FIFA World Cup broadcaster was expected soon, as the FIFA team's visit to India successfully negotiated with a potential partner, with the announcement anticipated at any moment. Fans were eager, but I was sure that a significant development was imminent. Today, that assurance has been confirmed.

Zee Entertainment’s partnership with FIFA is a bold, visionary step. It will enrich the viewing experience of millions of Indian fans, strengthen the sports broadcasting landscape, and contribute meaningfully to the growth of football in India.

As someone who has dedicated his life to the development of football, I welcome this move wholeheartedly. I wish Zee and FIFA great success in this partnership and hope that this marks the beginning of a new chapter for football broadcasting in India.

The countdown to the FIFA World Cup 2026 has officially started in India, and the country is prepared to celebrate football like never before.

Celebrate the FIFA World Cup 2026! Long live the FIFA World Cup!
