East Bengal FC has achieved a historic milestone by clinching the Indian Women's League (IWL) title in the 2024-25 season. This win is significant as it represents their success in just their third attempt. East Bengal has become the first team from Kolkata to secure this esteemed title in women's football, establishing new benchmarks for women’s football in India. Despite facing challenges such as limited sponsorship, a lack of dedicated training facilities, and commitments to the local women's league, the journey of East Bengal FC's women's team is a testament to determination, strategic planning, and triumph.

By securing their first IWL title, East Bengal will represent India in the AFC Women's Champions League. This is a prestigious opportunity for the victorious team to compete internationally. While it's not unusual for this century-old club to participate at the Asian level, East Bengal will be the first women's team from Bengal to play in Asia. What an accomplishment!

It felt nearly unstoppable, like an unbeatable team

Right from the season's first match, East Bengal FC demonstrated their serious contention for the title. Their energetic play highlighted their skills and teamwork, resonating with fans. They began the tournament with a strong start that set a positive tone.

Throughout the league, East Bengal maintained a strong performance, with only one loss to Gokulam Kerala FC. This closely fought match concluded with Gokulam winning 3-2. In the final match, East Bengal will face Gokulam in Kolkata, offering a chance for the champions to seek revenge against the two-time champions.

Aside from that single loss, EB unexpectedly drew 1-1 with Sribhumi on match day 12. If East Bengal manages to secure a victory against Gokulam in the final game on 18th April, it would be a remarkable accomplishment for the team, possibly establishing a record that might last for a significant period.

The Mastermind Behind the Team

Central to East Bengal FC's triumph was the dedication of key club officials, including Ajit Banerjee, Anirban Datta, and several of their associates. They understood the necessity of recruiting talented players and appointed Anthony Andrews as head coach. Known for his success with Gokulam Kerala FC, where he secured two titles, Andrews' previous experience was crucial during the IWL season, enhancing the team's strategy for high-stakes matches.

The Red and Gold Brigade's high-value signings featured key players from the Indian Women's National team and top scorer Elshaddai Acheampong of Ghana, who led the IWL with 20 goals for Gokulam Kerala, significantly enhancing their offensive strength. This combination of talented players and effective leadership was crucial in transforming the team's dynamics, ultimately leading them to victory.

Financial Challenges and Resilience

East Bengal FC's path has been characterized by financial struggles. Despite losing a major sponsor before the IWL began, the club continued to push forward. Their capacity to overcome these obstacles showcased both resilience and the potential for growth in women’s football. By clinching the IWL title, East Bengal FC proved that success is achievable even when financial plans go awry. Now, women players in India can anticipate better contracts and more opportunities on larger platforms because East Bengal increased the economic value of women players by offering record contract fees to several Indian and foreign recruits.

Promotion & Relegation Enhance League Competitiveness

As East Bengal FC celebrated their victory, the season also acted as a warning for the reigning champions, Odisha FC. Previously in the spotlight, they struggled to replicate the performance they showcased last season in the IWL. By the middle of the season, Odisha FC was positioned near the bottom of the table, a sharp contrast to their earlier success.

Since last season, the IWL has adopted a home-and-away format, with two teams moving up from IWL 2. This season introduces promotion and relegation, increasing the league's competitiveness. For clubs seeking success, strategic decisions in acquiring talent and developing players are crucial. With two teams facing relegation, the final matches have become more significant, encouraging all teams to perform at their best to remain competitive.

A Bright Future for Women’s Football

The victory for East Bengal FC is more than just lifting a trophy. It represents a step forward for the entire landscape of women’s football in India. Their success has heightened interest among fans and enthusiasts, creating a stronger pathway for future investments in women’s teams across the nation.

As other clubs observe this success, expectations for women's football are likely to rise, motivating more young girls to consider careers in the sport. With evolving societal perspectives and greater recognition of women players' accomplishments, the future of women’s football in India appears promising.

A Testament to Dedication

East Bengal FC's incredible journey in the Indian Women's League showcases what can be accomplished through dedication, resilience, and solid planning. This historic victory inspires current players and symbolizes a fresh beginning for women’s football in India.

As the league grows in popularity and attracts a larger audience, there is optimism that East Bengal FC's successes are merely the start. By further advancing women's football, we anticipate improved opportunities, increased salaries, and enduring legacies for women football players in the future.

With India's growing emphasis on promoting women's participation in sports, East Bengal FC's victory in the IWL 2024-25 season serves as a symbol of hope, highlighting the determination of women athletes who are overcoming obstacles and reaching new heights.
