The Indian national men's football team recently faced a major setback by not qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027. This is significant as it is the first time since the tournament expanded to 24 teams in 2019 that India has not made it. After participating in both the 2019 and 2023 editions, this disappointment raises serious concerns about the future of football in India. Just weeks ago, the thought of the Indian team missing out on the 24-team AFC Asian Cup seemed unthinkable. However, after their loss to Singapore at home on October 14, 2025, the Blue Tigers have been excluded from the continental championship for the first time since 2019. Let's examine the various consequences of this failure and its implications for the future of Indian football.

Reputational and Perceptional Damage

The immediate consequence of this failure is the harm to the reputation of Indian football. Although the national team hasn't achieved much success recently, there was an expectation for them to secure a place in the 24-team AFC Asian Cup 2027. Being the top-ranked team in their group, it was reasonable to anticipate that the Blue Tigers would qualify for the continental event in Saudi Arabia in 2027. Not qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup might lead people to think that Indian football is either stagnating or declining. According to social media sentiments of football fans in India, the sport has suffered a significant blow in terms of its reputation and confidence. Most fans and stakeholders are disappointed with the results, and many have openly expressed their views on this major failure. Additionally, the national team's performance is indicative of the overall progress of football in the country. This negative perception can hinder efforts to develop the sport at all levels.

Loss of Significant Competitive Game Time

The AFC Asian Cup provides an opportunity not only for competition but also for gaining crucial experience against some of Asia's top teams. In the last AFC Asian Cup 2023 held in Qatar, India faced Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria, all of whom were higher-ranked opponents. Although the Blue Tigers did not perform well in these three matches in Doha, playing against these nations granted the players and team valuable experience and exposure, which every Indian football fan and stakeholder noted for each player. Moreover, it is not just the matches during the final tournament but also the quality of friendly games for preparation that matter. All teams that qualify for the final tournament prefer to play against other qualified teams, which means that until early 2027, India might struggle to secure quality competitive game time.

By failing to qualify, India loses the chance to participate in matches that could have tested and enhanced the team's performance. When the team misses the opportunity to join continental competitions, it becomes challenging for the coach to build a competitive squad. Senior players on the national team need that competitive environment to perform at their best and advance the team as a cohesive unit. The absence of competitive play can significantly hinder player development and team chemistry, making future international competitions even more challenging.

Players Will Not Experience the Continental Stage Until 2031

The AFC Asian Cup offers players an opportunity to showcase their talents on a grander stage. Missing the 2027 edition means players will have to wait until 2031 for another opportunity. This delay could be discouraging for aspiring players who hoped to take part in the 2027 AFC Asian Cup, potentially reducing motivation, particularly among younger players eager to leave their mark. India's next significant competitive event will be the beginning of the FIFA World Cup 2030 qualification competition in 2027, with the SAFF Championship and international friendlies being the only chances for international football in the interim.

Moreover, performing well at the AFC Asian Cup 2027 could have opened opportunities for Indian players to join major clubs in Asia. Missing this platform affects their ambitions and growth prospects. Ultimately, Indian players need to explore different regions in Asia and Europe to participate in more competitive leagues, and events like the Asian Cup offer significant opportunities. The time has come for Indian players to realize that relying solely on India's domestic league is insufficient for their professional growth. Given the current situation in the domestic market, it is a major setback for talented players aiming to venture outside India and within Asia. Consequently, players must wait for the next opportunity to showcase their skills and potential to the world.

Decline in Brand Investment

It's widely known that successful national teams draw investment from brands and sponsors eager to join the excitement and, more importantly, recognize significant value in commercial and brand partnerships. Unfortunately, India's failure to qualify might deter potential sponsors from investing in Indian football. This setback has occurred at an inopportune moment, as Indian football is actively seeking new commercial partners for the Indian Super League. In the coming weeks, the Federation must also seek a national team sponsor/partner, as current partnerships are set to expire on December 8, 2025. It's well-established that when the national team experiences a series of poor results and the FIFA ranking has significantly dropped to 136, the market is unlikely to respond with encouraging brand-level investment in the sport.

Overall Commercial Interests Will Decline

The national team's performance has a direct impact on commercial interests in football. Failing to qualify can result in decreased interest from broadcasters and sponsors. This situation may also influence the funding for clubs and leagues, affecting the entire football ecosystem. Industry experts suggest that commercial revenues could drop by up to 20-25% due to the failure of the national team, impacting everything from player salaries to grassroots initiatives. Without attracting new investment and sponsors for the national team, there will be a reduced budget for various development activities, hindering the game's growth. Currently, there is minimal investment and budget allocated to grassroots, women's football, and youth development. If the market does not commit substantial funds to the national team and related properties, the lower levels of the football pyramid will inevitably suffer greatly.

Impact on the FIFA World Cup Aspirations

The dream of qualifying for the FIFA World Cup keeps fans and players inspired. However, when the national team fails to even reach the AFC Asian Cup, it raises doubts about future goals. This damages the brand image of Indian football, making the goal of competing on the global stage seem more distant. Without strong performances in continental tournaments, the journey to the World Cup appears increasingly out of reach. With the expansion to 48 teams starting in 2026, more questions from fans and the public will inevitably arise: why is India still unable to qualify for the FIFA World Cup?

This question is not exclusive to Indians; it is frequently asked in many parts of the world, especially in Asia: why is the national team not performing well? People often recall that during the 50s and 60s, Indian football dominated Asia. Thus, the expectation for India to perform well extends beyond its borders. When the dream falters and the team fails to secure a spot in the continental championship, the goodwill the sport has in India also diminishes. When discussions about football dwindle, the situation worsens, which is not conducive to India's aspirations to qualify for the World Cup in future.

Government Support May Wane

In many countries, government support plays a vital role in the development of sports. If Indian football appears stagnant, especially when the national team fails to deliver results and misses qualifications, the government may not view football favorably and might lack the motivation to increase the football budget. Currently, government funding is significantly allocated to various national teams, including women's national teams. Notably, the women national teams (Senior, U20 & U17) have qualified for the Asian Championships, which is a positive aspect for Indian football. There is a chance that the women's team could receive more government support in the future if they continue to perform well.

India has expressed its interest in hosting the AFC Asian Cup 2031 by submitting an Expression of Interest (EoI). The success of this bid is fully dependent on government backing. To secure the hosting rights, substantial financial support is needed from the Union Government, State Governments, and corporate sponsors. The bidding process is anticipated to cost at least USD 100 million, and hosting the Asian Cup would necessitate a minimum investment of USD 5 billion, given the competitive nature of the bidding and the ambition to host the AFC Asian Cup.

Other Fallout from This Situation

Not qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup has far-reaching consequences beyond immediate results. This was evident when India played in Goa, attracting only 2,036 spectators for the match against Singapore, likely due to low expectations or a series of poor performances. Studies show that disappointment can lead to reduced fan engagement and lower match attendance. This impact extends beyond just the fans to affect the entire ecosystem. It's essential to avoid a scenario in football where hope diminishes, which calls for proactive strategies. Breaking this cycle can be difficult, underscoring the need for stakeholders to tackle underlying issues and work towards a brighter future for Indian football.

The Road Ahead

Despite these challenges, there is optimism for Indian football. It's important to remember that the national team began their FIFA World Cup 2026 qualification campaign with a strong start, especially with the encouraging win over Kuwait, which united the fans. However, setbacks against lower-ranked teams like Afghanistan have led fans and the market to reconsider their views on Indian football. Nonetheless, let's view this period as temporary and hope for a realization within the system that leads to swift corrective measures to get things back on track.

It is essential to quickly realign in order to start preparing for the next qualification with a clear plan of action. The team needs to come together and concentrate on a strong objective. Support from fans, stakeholders, and the government will be crucial in restoring the image of Indian football and promoting the sport's development.

Reflecting on the Future of Indian Football

Not qualifying for the AFC Asian Cup 2027 is a major blow to Indian football, with lasting impacts that could hinder the development of football in India. From tarnished reputations to potential declines in investment, numerous obstacles lie ahead. Yet, with a collective effort from all stakeholders, there is a chance to foster growth and elevate the standing of Indian football. Though the path forward will be challenging, the passion for football in India is unwavering, offering hope that the nation can rise again and reclaim its place on the continental stage. This difficult period will eventually pass if there is a commitment to infuse the system with the necessary energy. Our hope remains strong, which is why we have devoted our lives to the game. Long Live Indian Football!
